Tim Hortons and the environment

Tim Hortons is committed to building and maintaining a framework that supports an environmental leadership position. We work with stakeholders including customers, stores operators, suppliers and governments, to drive toward environmental leadership best practices. We review on an ongoing basis, our corporate policies to ensure that we are integrating environmental considerations into our programs and practices.  Our main areas of focus are Community Leadership, Recycling, Waste Reduction and Litter Awareness.

We are a proud supporter of over 125 community clean-up events across Canada. Working together with community partners does make a difference.

We continue to expand our comprehensive waste diversion program, that allows customers to sort their waste packaging for maximum recycling and to prevent unnecessary disposal to landfill. We offer recycling and/or composting at various stores in Atlantic Canada, Ontario and most recently Quebec.

As an incentive to use a travel mug, we offer our customers a 10 cent discount on all refills, in Canada. This is a national program.

To encourage reduction of paper use, most locations offer china mugs, dishes and cutlery to customers dining in our stores.

We are working with our suppliers to review all of our current packaging including our paper cup, to ensure that we are using materials that can be composted or recycled, where facilities exist.

We are testing the bulk collection of our coffee grinds as suitable material for organics treatment. Composting programs also exist in various regions across the country including PEI, NS, BC and most recently Quebec.

During the year, we have messages in our stores reminding our customers to "please be a good neighbour, don't litter."
